Department of Geology
The Department of Geology was started as Madras University P.G Extension center in the year 1984. It has evolved as one of the pioneer departments under Periyar University from 1997 onwards. Salem district is one of the rich mineralized belt in the country, so the university has right choice to have geology department in this region. The department is offering M.Sc (Geology), M.Tech (Exploration Geology and Spatial Information) and Ph.D programmes. The faculty members in the department have specialized in various disciplines such as Remote Sensing, GIS, Water Resource, Disaster Mitigation and Management, Petroleum Exploration, Micropaleontology, Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, Geochemistry and Mineral Exploration. The department is conducting sponsored research projects supported by Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and Department of Science and Technology (DST). The faculty members of the department extend their service in various consultancy programmes including Geoinformatics for Natural Resource Evaluation, Disaster Mitigation and Management, Groundwater Exploration, Water-shed Management, Water Harvesting and Artificial Recharge, Mineral and Petroleum Exploration. The prime objective of the department is to cater sound geological knowledge to the students, motivate youngsters for doing research, create awareness among the public and sort out the societal problems related geoscience.
