All Rights Reserved. Periyar University Periyar University was established in 1997 and named after the great rationalist of the 20 th century E.V.Ramasamy affectionately called ‘Thanthai Periyar’. The University aims at developing value-based higher education in different disciplines thereby uplifting the socially and economically backward people in this region. The University has jurisdiction over the four districts, such as Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri. It is situated on the North-South national corridor (NH-7) about 10 km from Salem city.
